Cassa’s Newsletter for March 2019

Dear All,

In my prayer time this morning (using the 'Reflections for Daily Prayer' app from the C of E), I read a passage from the prophet Jeremiah which said:

My people have committed two sins: they have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water' - Jeremiah 2:13

As we approach Lent it is good for us to consider where we have forgotten God, ‘the living water’ and instead gone our own way and become what we worship. The saying, 'you are what you eat' comes to mind!

In a country paralysed by politicians' personal ambitions, a world where the poor suffer and the environment is being destroyed by consumerism, where are Christians being called to make a difference? It seems we become whatever it is that takes up our time, our money and our attention. Our priorities in life will shape us and mould us. This Lent we are invited once again to reprioritise our lives, to drink deeply from the spring of living water that we may join in with the building of God's kingdom of peace and justice.

Lent Ideas:  This year we have decided as a family to fast from plastic, this is going to be a big challenge but worth it to take a small stand for environmental justice. See for more info: (https://www.clientearth.org/plastic-free-lent/) What are you thinking of doing?

Further ideas:

- Practice one of our Holy Habits: Biblical Teaching, Fellowship, Breaking Bread

- Sign up for daily emails:  https://www.churchofengland.org/pilgrim

- Read one of the Lent books on the bookshelves at Church

- Use the Lent calendar attached to this email.

Partnership for Missional Church:     Last weekend Janine and I and some representatives of the PCC went on the latest training for the Partnership for Missional Church. We thought about what we had learned from our Timeline Activity and we learned a new 'tool' which will help us to listen to our community and where God might be calling us to serve our community. Our next congregation event will be on Sunday 12th May, please save the date.

Janine has also given us a Lent challenge to have conversations with people in our community to listen carefully, reflect on what you hear and notice what this reveals.

What has been happening in the life of our church in the last month?    Like all families, our church family is busy living out the calling God has given us in lots of different ways. Our various services have continued to provide a range of ways to worship God, from early morning to evening and from music to silence, for young and older but always focussing on praising our God and learning together the way of Jesus. This month we have been focussing on the holy habit of 'Fellowship', the deep and inclusive togetherness that Christian faith gives to church communities. I wonder as part of this if we might attend a service that we don't normally go to, to see what it is like and to connect with the regulars at that service?

May Jesus give you grace to grow in holiness, to deny yourselves and take up your cross and follow him.

Blessings, Cassa
